The Industrial Automation Challenge?

The Industrial Automation Challenge

New challenges keep arising for manufacturers due to the super-competitive industrial environment.

These challenges progress at their pace due to the capacity and efficiency of the automation industrial system which is designed to accommodate the emerging expectations of the market.

Businesses are moving towards industrial automation to remain competitive and induce economies of scale and production efficiencies. They also look to keep up with the continuous technological advances in the existing technological automation industry. These advances such as the induction of machine learning, intelligent machines and robots are the reason why modern automation is being reshaped to outperform capabilities over a range of activities.

Other than increasing productivity, the accuracies, margin of errors and qualities of work are progressing beyond imagination.

In this article, we will examine four elements that are intertwined to help compete in the industrial automation challenge.

1. Human-Machine Interface (HMI)

There is always a communication channel in the automation system of a business which allows humans to run or monitor the industrial system. This system is called the HMI. The HMI is a combination of software and hardware which forms a channel of communication between operators and their machines. Another name for an HMI is an MMI – Man-Machine Interface.

2. Programmable Logic Controller (PLC)

These PLC’s are industrial grade digital computers which are designed to work in the same fashion as personal computers would. The difference is that PLC’s are processor-based systems which are designed to work in hazardous environments.

These systems take inputs and in turn communicate it to the entire production unit and lastly present the human operators with the output data.PLC’s can easily control an entire manufacturing unit and its processes while also ensuring precision and great quality.

3. Industrial Control Devices and Sensors

These are an integral part of today’s industrial automation, playing a diverse and vital role in evaluating information. This could be data related to temperature control, measurement, pressure control, speed, weight and many more.

As was mentioned above, this form of industrial automation is getting more intelligent and sophisticated with every passing year.

4. Motor Control Units

With respect to automation, all components in the system are interlinked with each other via a programmable logic controller or a central controlling unit. These motor drives are made to respond in a physical manner to an instruction made in a PLC and hence perform the action as proposed by the operator.

All of these four components, if synergized efficiently, can produce monumental results in the form of quality, accuracy, and precision.
